Volleyball Loses to Wheaton, Springfield at JWU Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bridgewater State University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches during day two action of the Johnson & Wales Invitational in Providence.

The Bears (0-8) lost to Wheaton College by a score of 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 25-19) and then fell to regional power Springfield College, 3-0 (25-6, 25-13, 25-13).

Bridgewater went 0-4 at the tournament and finished in seventh place.  Springfield captured the tournament title as the Pride went 4-0 and did not lose a game.

In the loss to Wheaton, sophomore outside hitter Danielle Dean (Gilford, N.H.) paced the Bears with 11 kills and 16 digs, while sophomore setter Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass.) notched 11 assists, eight kills and four aces.  Freshman setter Lisa Vega (Milford, Mass.) added 14 assists and ten digs, and sophomore libero Kristen Robillard (Swansea, Mass.) chipped in with 19 digs.

Dean registered five kills against Springfield, while Appleman tallied seven digs and five assists.  Robillard, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, added eight digs.

Bridgewater State opens MASCAC regular season play on Wednesday, September 14th when the Bears travel to Salem State University for a seven o'clock match with the Vikings.
