Clerc, DePina, Appleman Named to All-MASCAC Volleyball Team

2010 All-MASCAC Volleyball Team

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University was represented with three players on the 2010 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) All-Conference Volleyball Team.

Senior outside hitter Julie Clerc (Acushnet, Mass.) and junior middle hitter Shelly DePina (New Bedford, Mass.) were each named to the All-MASCAC First Team, while freshman setter Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass.) was selected to the second team.

Clerc is making her third consecutive appearance on the first team, while this marks DePina’s second straight appearance.

In 26 matches this season, Clerc recorded 212 kills to go along with 29 aces, and 233 digs.  She also became just the second player in program history to reach the millennium milestone for both kills and digs.  Clerc, who joins Melissa Machado (2002-2005) on that short list, finished her career forth all-time at Bridgewater with 1,055 kills and forth with 1,174 digs.

DePina led the team with 298 kills as well as 68 blocks (57 solo) in 26 matches this season.  She also accumulated 28 aces and 143 digs.  In three seasons at Bridgewater, DePina has 812 kills to her credit as she will look to become the seventh player in program history to reach the 1,000-kill milestone.

Appleman made her rookie season an impactful one as she recorded 648 set assists. She also tacked on 96 digs and 14 aces.

Clerc ranks sixth in kills and tenth in digs among the MASCAC leaders, while DePina is second in kills and Appleman is third in assists.

The Bridgewater State volleyball team finished the 2010 campaign with an overall record of 15-11 including a 4-2 mark in MASCAC regular season play. Seeded second at the MASCAC Tournament, the Bears swept Worcester State in the semifinals before dropping a 3-1 decision to conference champion Westfield State in the final.
