Volleyball Finishes 1-3 at JWU Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Bridgewater State College volleyball team posted a record of 1-3 at the season opening Johnson & Wales University Invitational over the weekend.

After a dropping both of their matches on Friday, the Bears split a pair of matches in day two action on Saturday.

BSC knocked off host Johnson & Wales, 3-2, and then fell to Keene State College by a margin of 3-1.

Springfield College captured the invitational championship as the Pride posted a perfect 4-0 record.  Connecticut College finished in second place (3-1), followed by Keene State (1-3), Bridgewater and Johnson & Wales (1-3).

In the 3-2 victory over the Wildcats, junior outside hitter Julie Clerc (Acushnet, MA) paced the Bears with 13 kills and 15 digs, while junior setter Natalie Cohen (Marstons Mills, MA) added 42 assists and four kills.

In the loss to Keene,  Bridgewater won the opening game but then dropped the next three.  Sophomore hitter Shelly DePina (New Bedford, MA) led the way with 13 kills, while Cohen chipped in with 27 assists and three aces.
