Volleyball Falls to Worcester State, 3-1

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Junior outside hitter Lauren Saylor (Swansea, MA) notched a team high 12 kills to pace Worcester State, 3-1, over Bridgewater State in MASCAC women's volleyball action on Tuesday evening at Lancer Gymnasium.

The Lancers, winners of five straight and 10 out of their last 12 games, improve to 12-5 and remain undefeated in conference play at 3-0. The Bears fall to 4-12 and now stand at 2-1 in the MASCAC.

WSC took the opening set, 25-18, and then Bridgewater State bounced back to take the second, 25-15. The Blue and Gold then took control of the match and beat the Bears, 25-19 and 25-17, for the win.

The last time that Worcester State defeated the Bears came on October 19, 1992 in a 3-2 triumph during the regular season. Bridgewater State got its revenge in the MASCAC Tournament later that season as they defeated WSC, 3-1, in the double-elimination pool playoff.

Sophomore Michelle Maas (Halifax, MA) also led the Lancers with a match-high 31 digs while freshman Brittany Stoddard (Orange, MA) handed out 20 assists. Saylor also tallied two aces.

The Bears were paced by sophomore Julie Clerc's (Acushnet, MA) 16 kills while junior Brianne Cobb (New Bedford, MA) recorded 29 digs. Sophomore Natalie Cohen (Marstons Mills, MA) finished with 37 helpers on the evening. Cobb served two aces while Cohen and classmate Shelby Burghart (Marshfield, MA) also added two blocks apiece.

Worcester State will head to Farmington, Maine for a quad match with UMaine Farmington, Mass. Maritime and Thomas. Bridgewater State will head to the Eastern Connecticut Crabtree Tournament to face host EConn and Johnson & Wales on Friday. Bridgewater will finish Saturday with a rematch with Bates and U. of New England.
