Volleyball Competes at MIT Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the MIT Invitational this afternoon in Cambridge, Mass. The Bears lost to Vassar College, 3-1, and wrapped up the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Bowdoin College.

With the two losses, BSC falls to 3-11 on the season.  For the tournament, the Bears finished in 15th place overall. Tufts University won the championship followed by Connecticut College in second place and Springfield College in third.

Sophomore outside hitter Julie Clerc (Acushnet, MA) paced the Bears in the loss to Vassar with 16 kills, 12 digs and three blocks (one solo).  Sophomore setter Natalie Cohen (Marstons Mills, MA) tallied 36 assists, 12 digs, four blocks (three solo) and three kills.  Junior Brianne Cobb (New Bedford, MA) added 27 digs while Shelly DePina chipped in with 12 kills and six blocks (one solo).  After winning the opening set of the match (25-19), the Bears dropped the next three (25-17, 25-22, 28-26).

In the loss to Bowdoin, Clerc and Cohen led the way again for the Bears.  Clerc notched eight kills and five digs, while Cohen finsihed with 16 assists, seven digs and six kills. Sophomore outside hitter Kristina Campbell (Taunton, MA) added six kills, while sophomore middle hitter Laura Babij (Montague, MA) chipped in with five kills.

The Bears travel to Framingham State College on Wednesday for a 6 o'clock MASCAC match with the Rams.
