BEVERLY, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches this afternoon to finish in eighth place at the Endicott Invitational Tournament.
Bridgewater dropped a 3-2 decision to Emmanuel College and ended the tournament with a 3-1 loss to New Jersey City University. Overall, the Bears went 0-3 at the tournament to open the 2008 season
BSC jumped out quickly against Emmanuel by winning the first two games, 25-23 and 25-22. Emmanuel took the next three however (25-21, 25-16, 15-10) to win the match. Against New Jersey City the Bears came out strong again, winning the opening game, 25-21. But New Jersey rallied to win the next three games (25-21, 25-15, 25-15) to come away with the victory.
Senior setter Elsa Apostoli (Natick, MA) registered 52 assists in the two matches to go along with 25 digs. Apostoli tallied 29 assists and 16 digs against Emmanuel, and 23 assists and 9 digs versus New Jersey City.
Sophomore hitter Julie Clerc (Acushnet, MA) notched 27 digs and 27 kills including an impressive 18 kills and 16 digs in the loss to New Jersey.
Junior defensive specialist Brianne Cobb (New Bedford, MA) added 35 digs and junior outside hitter Alyssa Grimes (Acushnet, MA) chipped in with 18 kills.
Bridgewater State travels to the Johnson & Wales Invitational next weekend. The Bears will take on Connecticut College (6:00) and Western Connecticut State University (8:00) on Friday night, and Keene State College (12:00) and host Johnson & Wales (2:00) on Saturday afternoon.
