Women's Track & Field Picks Up Four Event Wins at Amherst Spring Fling

AMHERST, Mass. -- Four members of the Bridgewater State University women's outdoor track & field team won events as the Bears competed on Sunday at the non-scoring Amherst Spring Fling.

Alison McDonough (Halifax, Mass.) captured the meet title in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 0.25 inches (5.49m) as she was less than three inches off her own school record of 18 feet, 2.5 inches set last season. McDonough also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.64 second, and finished fifth in the 100-meter dash (12.63).

Jailene Escalera (Rockland, Mass.) garnered top honors in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.36 seconds. Escalera added a second place performance in the 200-meter dash (25.33) as she was just shy of her school outdoor mark of 25.29 seconds set a year ago.

Kiara Abrantes (Somerset, Mass.) won the meet crown in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.32 seconds, and checked in at third in the 200 (25.49). Abrantes recorded outdoor personal bests in both events.

Serenity Sands (East Bridgewater, Mass.) outleaped the field in the high jump as she recorded a mark of five feet, six inches (1.68m).

The foursome of McDonough, Escalera, Abrantes and Tristen Gomes (Middleboro, Mass.) placed second in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 48.56 seconds.

Gomes added a third place showing in the triple jump (35'8.75"/10.89m) and finished tenth in the long jump (16'0.5"/4.89m).

Natalie Kalgren (Ayer, Mass.) tossed the javelin a career-best 100 feet, four inches (30.60m) to place sixth in the event.

Juliana Patrone (Wilmington, Mass.) rounded out the Bears top ten performers as she finished ninth in the high jump (5'175"/1.57m).

The BSU outdoor track & field teams compete on Friday and Saturday at the Silfen Invitational hosted by Connecticut College.

Notes: Sands is currently ranked sixth in all of Division III in the high jump while Abrantes is 18th in 400 and McDonough is 21st in the long jump. The 4x100 is 31st on the national level.
