McDonough, Sands, Gomes Lead Women's Track & Field at Tufts Cupid Challenge

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Graduate student Alison McDonough (Halifax, Mass.), senior Serenity Sands (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and junior Tristen Gomes (Middleboro, Mass.) posted record breaking performances to lead the Bridgewater State University women's indoor track & field on Saturday at the non-scoring Tufts Cupid Challenge held at the Gancher Family Sports and Convocation Center.

McDonough captured top honors and broke her own school indoor record in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 9.5 inches (5.42m) as she eclipsed her previous standard of 17 feet, 8.5 inches (5.40m) set earlier this season at the Springfield College Massasoit Classic.

McDonough and fellow grad student Jailene Escalera (Rockland, Mass.) each broke the BSU 60-meter dash mark of 7.77 seconds (which they both shared). McDonough won the meet title with a school record and finals time of 7.75 seconds as she edged Escalera (7.76) by 1/100 of a second.

McDonough added a first-place performance in the 60-meter hurdles with a finals time of 8.82 seconds, while Escalera was the top sprinter in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.57 seconds.

Sands won the high jump with a leap of five feet, 7.25 inches (1.71m) and, in the process, eclipsed the Bears' previous indoor standard of five feet, seven inches (1.70m) which she shared with former Bear and current assistant coach, Samantha Richner.

Gomes placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet, 0.25 inches (10.98m) as she broke the BSU indoor record of 35 feet, 4.75 inches (10.79m) set by Ariele Krevosky in 2015. Gomes also finished 11th in the long jump (16'4.25"/4.98m).

Junior Kiara Abrantes (Somerset, Mass.) placed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.03 seconds and added a second place performance in the 200 (25.94).

Sophomore Naomi Cass (Westport, Mass.) finished third in the 3,000-meter run with a PR of 10:23.76. Cass was less than five seconds off BSU Hall of Famer Molly Rouillard's school mark of 10:19.00 set in 2013.

The Bears will travel to Smith College next Saturday for the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Championships.

Notes: Sands is ranked third in all of Division III in the high jump while Escalera is 15th in the 200 and McDonough in 22nd in the 60-meter dash. Escalera's time of 25.57 in the 200 was converted due to track size.
