McDonough, Escalera Lead Women's Track & Field at Lyon Invitational

NORTON, Mass. -- Graduate students Alison McDonough (Halifax, Mass.) and Jailene Escalera (Rockland, Mass.) each broke the school record in the 60-meter dash to lead the Bridgewater State University women's indoor track & field team on Saturday at the Lyon Invitational hosted by Wheaton College.

The Bears finished third in the team standings at the meet with 105 points trailing meet champion WPI (189 pts.) and host Wheaton (136 pts.). 

McDonough and Escalera tied for first place in the 60 with a time of 7.77 seconds as they eclipsed Escalera's previous mark of 7.83 seconds set last month at the UMass Boston Beacons Open.

McDonough also captured top honors in the 60-meter hurdles with a personsal-best time of 8.81 seconds as well as the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 2.75 inches (5.25m).

Escalera added a first-place performance in the 300-meter dash with a PR of 41.07 seconds.

Sophomore Naomi Cass (Westport, Mass.) competed in the 5,000-meter run for the first time in her career and won the event with a time of 18:03.20.

McDonough is currently ranked third in all of Division III in the hurdles while McDonough and Escalera are tied for 19th in the 60 and Cass is 25th in the 5,000.

Senior Serenity Sands (East Bridgewater, Mass.) placed first in the high jump with a height of five feet, 3.25 inches (1.61m). She also finished fifth and equaled her personal-best in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.77 seconds.

Senior Juliana Patrone (Wilmington, Mass.) finished second in the high jump with a season-best mark of five feet, 1.25 inches (1.56m). 

Junior Lily Valcovic (East Taunton, Mass.) posted a third-place showing in the 5,000 with a PR of 19:28.06.

Junior Kiara Abrantes (Somerset, Mass.) finished fourth in the 500-meter dash (1:20.13) and tied for seventh in the 60-meter dash (8.02). Abrantes competed in the 500 for the first time in her career while her time in the 60 marked a personal-best.

Abrantes, Escalera, Major and junior Kate Brown (Acushnet, Mass.) placed third in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:48.33.

Senior Charlie Katz (West Yarmouth, Mass.) finished sixth in the weight thrown (35'11.25"/10.95m) while classmate Nicole Major (Andover, Mass.) was the eighth runner to cross the finish line in the mile run (5:37.73). 

The Bears are back in action next Saturday when they travel to Springfield College for the Massasoit Classic.
