Escalera, Sands Lead Women's Track & Field at Beacons Open

BOSTON, Mass. -- Graduate student Jailene Escalera (Rockland, Mass.) and senior Serenity Sands (East Bridgewater, Mass.) etched their names in the record books to lead the Bridgewater State University women's indoor track & field team at the UMass Boston Beacons Open held on Sunday at The Track at New Balance.

Escalera garnered top honors and set school records in both the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Escalera notched a finals time of 7.83 seconds in the 60 as she eclipsed teammate Alison McDonough's (Halifax, Mass.) 2022 mark of 7.94 seconds. Escalera registered a time of 25.50 seconds in the 200 to break Jayci Andrew's program mark of 26.37 seconds set twice in 2017.

Sands captured the meet title in the high jump with a leap of five feet, seven inches (1.70m) as she equaled the Bears' indoor mark set by former standout (and current jumps coach) Samantha Richner in 2016. Sands added a fourth place showing in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles (9.77).

The Bears finished with five first-place performances on the day.

McDonough placed first in both the 60-meter hurdles and the the long jump, and finished second in the 60-meter dash. McDonough posted a finals time of 9.05 seconds to win the hurdles and recorded a winning leap of 17 feet, 5.5 inches (5.32m) in the long jump. She also checked in with a finals time of 7.92 seconds in the 60-meter dash.

Junior Kiara Abrantes (Somerset, Mass.) placed second in the 400-meter dash (58.89) and fifth in the finals of the 60-meter dash (8.12).

Senior Juliana Patrone (Wilmington, Mass.) finished fifth in the high jump (4'9"/1.45m) while classmate Charlie Katz (West Yarmouth, Mass.) was sixth in the weight throw (35'6"/10.83m).

Sands is currently ranked second in all of Division III in the high jump while McDonough is tenth in the hurdles and 26th in the long jump. Escalera is presently 14th among DIII student-athlete in the 200 and 22nd in the 60 while Patrone is 24th in the 400.

The Bears are off until Saturday, January 13th when they head to the Wheaton Invitational.
