McDonough Leads Women's Track & Field at Season-Opening BSU Bears Invitational

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Junior Alison McDonough (Halifax, Mass.) captured the meet title in the 100-meter hurdles and placed second in two other events to lead the Bridgewater State University women's outdoor track & field team at the season-opening BSU Bears Invitational on Saturday at Swenson Field.

McDonough had a solid all-around meet for the Bears. She placed first in the hurdles with a time of 15.45 seconds and finished second in both the 100-meter dash (12.29) and the long jump (17 feet/5.18m).

Junior Abbi Peterson (Watertown, Mass.) and senior Camille Hanna (Milton, Vt.) broke a pair of school records.

Peterson placed first and set the school record in the high jump with a leap of five feet, 7.25 inches (1.71m). She eclipsed the previous BSU outdoor mark of five feet, 6.5 inches set by Samantha Richner in 2016.

Hanna set the school record and placed fourth in the pole vault with a height of eight feet, 8.25 inches (2.65m). She broke the Bears' previous outdoor mark of eight feet, 6.25 inches set by Taylor Robitaille in 2011.

Freshman Kiara Abrantes (Somerset, Mass.) captured the meet title in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.18 seconds, while junior Madison Ashley (Freetown, Mass.) placed third in the event with a time of 27.55 seconds.

Graduate student Jayci Andrews (Plymouth, Mass.) finished second behind McDonough in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.69 seconds. Andrews was competing for the first time since capturing the Division III national title in the 100 hurdles back in 2019.

Sophomore Serenity Sands (East Bridgewater, Mass.) finished second behind Peterson in the high jump with a leap of five feet, 3.75 inches (1.71m), while senior Ashley Garvey (Woburn, Mass.) placed third in the hammer throw with a toss of 124 feet, nine inches (38.02m).

McDonough (100 dash, hurdles, long jump), Peterson (high jump), Andrews (hurdles) and Sands (high jump) all qualified for the Division III New England Championships. McDonough (100), Peterson and Sands also qualified for the NEICAAA Championships.

The Bears 4x400-meter relay team featuring Abrantes, Andrews and juniors Lily Marra (Lakeville, Mass.) and Lindsey Golden (Mansfield, Mass.) placed second in the event with a time of 4:13.73.

Next weekend, the Bears will compete at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic.
