Women's Track & Field Captures Team Title at ECSU Invitational

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- The Bridgewater State University women's track and field team captured the team title at the 8th Annual ECSU Invitational hosted by Eastern Connecticut State University on Friday.

The Bears recorded a team score of 176 points to finish just ahead of host Eastern Connecticut (172 pts.).  Trinity College (122 pts.), UMass Boston (108 pts.), Lasell (32 pts.), Post (25 pts.) and Mass. Maritime (13 pts.) rounded out the scoring.

Four Bears won individual events.

Melissa Chiasson (Maynard, Mass.) was the top placewinner in the hammer throw with a toss of 143 feet, eight inches (43.79 meters).  Juliana Keene (Norton, Mass.) posted a distance of 109 feet, seven inches (33.41 meters) to win the javelin.

Ariele Krevosky (Oxford, Mass.) captured top honors in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.74 seconds, while Theresa Connolly was the first to cross the finish line in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:30.86.

Traci Perry (Middleboro, Mass.) placed second in the 200-meter dash (25.69) and ran a leg on the Bears' 4x400-meter relay squad which finished second with a time of 4:12.58.  Joining Perry in the relay were Sydney Vaughn (Lowell, Mass.),  Sabrina Rizzo (Peabody, Mass.) and Amanda Lane (Abington, Mass.).

Danielle Poto (North Andover, Mass.) finished second in the 5,000-meter run (19:41.39), while Veronica Wiggins (Pawtucket, R.I.) placed second in the hammer (125'11"/38.38m) and Samantha Richner (Hanson, Mass.) added a second place performance in the 100-meter hurdles (16.18).

Perry qualified for all three regional postseason meets in the 200, while Chiasson and Krevosky qualified for DIII New Englands and ECACs in the hammer and hurdles, respectively. Krevosky also qualified for DIII New Englands in the long jump as she finished fourth in the event at the meet with a mark of 16 feet, five inches (5.00 meters).

Next weekend, the Bears will compete at the Larry Ellis Invitational hosted by Princeton University as well as the Eric Loeschner Meet hosted by Fitchburg State University.
