Women's Tennis Falls to RIC in Little East Semifinals, 5-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Second-seeded Rhode Island College advanced to the finals of the 2022 Little East Conference (LEC) Women's Tennis Tournament with a 5-0 semifinal win over third-seeded Bridgewater State University on Thursday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Center.

The host Anchorwomen (11-1) advance to the tournament championship match and will entertain #1 seed UMass Boston on Saturday afternoon. The visiting Bears end the season with an overall record of 9-5.

RIC swept the three doubles matches to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Freshman Erica Botelho (Greenville, R.I.) and senior Serena Bobola (Cranston, R.I.) teamed up for an 8-1 win at third doubles, while senior Jenna Lisi (Cranston, R.I.) and junior Lauren Macera (Cranston, R.I.) posted an 8-3 victory at the top spot. Sophomore Amara Devine (Greenville, R.I.) and junior Amiah Sommer (Cumberland, R.I.) capped off doubles play with an 8-4 decision at the second flight.

Lisi cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 straight set decision at number on singles to pull the Anchorwomen within a point of clinching the match. Bobola then posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the sixth flight to record the fifth and deciding point and send RIC into the finals for the seventh straight season.

The remaining four singles flights were left unfinished. BSU junior Abigail Ramer (Sherwood, Ore.) won her first set, 6-3, at second singles and was leading in the second set, 5-2, when the match was stopped. Senior Mackenzie Silveira (Middletown, R.I.) also won her first set at the third flight, 6-4, but trailed 4-2 in the second. Junior Allison Carter (Raynham, Mass.) split the first two sets at number five, 6-2, 1-6, while graduate student Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) dropped a 4-6 decision in the opening set at number four and led 3-2 in the second.

Notes: Rosa wrapped up her four-year career at Bridgewater State with a 34-18 (.654) doubles record and a 27-20 (.574) singles mark….Silveira played two seasons with the Bears and finished 23-7 (.767) in doubles play and 7-7 (.500) in singles competition.
