Women's Tennis Falls to RIC, 9-0, in Little East Clash

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Rhode Island College women's tennis team began defense of their Little East Conference (LEC) title as the Anchorwomen posted a 9-0 victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on Saturday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Center.

The Anchorwomen improve to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Little East, while the Bears fall to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play. RIC has won each of the last seven meetings of the two teams. The Anchorwomen are also 14-11 versus the Bears since BSU joined the Little East in 2004.

RIC swept the three doubles matches and each of the six singles flights to record the win.

Senior Jenna Lisi (Cranston, R.I.) and junior Lauren Macera (Cranston, R.I.) teamed up for an 8-2 win at number on doubles, while junior Amiah Sommer (Cumberland, R.I.) and sophomore Amara Devine (Greenville, R.I.) posted a tough 8-6 decision at the second flight. Freshman Erica Botelho (Greenville, R.I.) and senior Serena Bobola (Cranston, R.I.) added an 8-1 triumph at the third spot.

Lisi, Macera, Botelho, senior Sarah Gonick (Kingston, Mass.) and Bobola each won in straight sets in singles play at the first (6-1 6-0), second (6-3, 6-0), third (6-2, 6-4), fifth (6-2, 6-1) and sixth (6-0, 6-0) flights, respectively.

The match of the day came at number four singles as Sommer outlasted BSU junior Allison Carter (Raynham, Mass.), 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 10-8.

In upcoming action, the Bears will compete at the Grass Court Doubles Tournament held at the National Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island on Wednesday at noon. The Anchorwomen travel to the University of Saint Joseph on Thursday afternoon to take on the Blue Jays at four.
