Women's Tennis Opens LEC Play with 9-0 Win Over Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. – The visiting Bridgewater State University women's tennis team opened Little East Conference (LEC) play with a 9-0 victory over Castleton University on Saturday afternoon at the Castleton Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 2-1 (1-0 LEC) on the season, while the Spartans fall to 1-2 (0-1 LEC).

Bridgewater State swept the three doubles matches and all six singles flights en route to the win.

Sophomore Madeline Von Ruden (Ashley Falls, Mass.) teamed with junior Abigail Ramer (Sherwood, Ore.) for an 8-0 triumph at first doubles and posted a 6-2, 6-0 straight set win at number one singles. Ramer added a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the second singles flight.

The Bears also received straight set singles wins from senior Mackenzie Silveira (Middletown, R.I.) at the third flight (6-0, 6-1), junior Allison Carter (Raynham, Mass.) at the fourth spot (6-4, 7-5) and sophomore Meghan Lotti (Stoneham, Mass.) at number six (6-1, 6-3). Sophomore Rebecca Hamel (Windham, Mass.) split the two sets at fifth singles, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), before winning in a super tiebreaker, 10-5.

Carter and Hamel paired up for an 8-0 decision at second doubles, while Silveira and junior Erin Lally (Danvers, Mass.) combined for an 8-6 win at the third doubles flight.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Roger Williams University on Thursday afternoon for a four o'clock match with the Hawks. The Spartans entertain Plattsburg State on Wednesday afternoon also at four.
