Women's Tennis Blanks Southern Maine, 9-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 Little East Conference victory over the University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon at the Gorham High School courts.

The Bears improve to 4-6 on the season and 3-2 in the Little East, while the Huskies fall to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Bridgewater State opened the match sweeping the three doubles matches by identical 8-1 margins. Freshman Sailor Nordstrom (New Bedford, Mass.) and senior Emma Mills (Westport, Mass.) combined for the win at the top flight, while grad student Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) and senior Angelique Gray (Barnstable, Mass.) prevailed at number two, and junior Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) won the point at number three.

The best match of the day came at number one singles where Nordstrom and USM senior Samantha Harden (Turner, Maine) split the first two sets before Nordstrom won the super tie-breaker to take the point with a 2-6, 6-0 (10-7) victory.

Sweeney (6-2, 6-3), Mills (6-1, 6-0), Gray (6-0, 6-2) and Tarantino (6-4, 6-0) all won in straight sets at the second, third, fifth and sixth flights, respectively. Rosa led 4-3 in the first set at fourth singles when her opponent retired due to injury.

In upcoming action, the Bears host Little East foe UMass Boston on Wednesday afternoon at three, while the Huskies entertain Emerson College tomorrow at noon.
