Women's Tennis Downs Southern Maine, 7-1

GORHAM, Maine -- The Bridgewater State University Bears won two out of three doubles matches and swept the singles points en route to a 7-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon at the Gorham High School Courts in Gorham, Maine.

The match was called before the second singles match was finished due to inclement weather.

The win is the fourth straight for the Bears who improve to 8-2 overall and remained undefeated in the Little East with a record of 6-0.  Southern Maine drops its fourth straight match to fall to 6-6 overall and 2-4 in the LEC.

Junior Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.) led the Bears in singles action downing USM junior Mary Moran (Windham, Maine) 6-3, 6-1 at first singles.  Senior Lauren Hopp (Dartmouth, Mass.) earned a straight set 6-0, 6-0 win over USM junior Monique Giroux (Troy, N.H.) at number five.

Senior Brittney Hislop (Burley, Wash.), freshman Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass.) and sophomore Melissa Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.) also won in straight sets at third, fourth and sixth singles, respectively, for the Bears.

The Huskies first doubles team of juniors Moran (Windham, Maine) and Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) earned USM's lone point defeating the Bridgewater State tandem of Williamson and Hopp,  8-5.  The Bears top doubles pairing was previously undefeated in league play entering the match.

Hislop and classmate Ashley Pereira (Assonet, Mass.) posted an 8-0 triumph at second doubles for the Bears, while Vautrin and sophomore Rachael Eramo (Rowley, Mass.) earned an 8-1 decision at number three.

Bridgewater State hosts UMass Dartmouth on Monday (11:00 a.m.) in a Little East Conference match. Southern Maine hosts Johnson State on Sunday (11:00 a.m.).
