Women's Swimmng & Diving Splits Tri-Meet with Plymouth, RIC

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's swimming and diving meet split a tri-meet with Plymouth State University and Rhode Island College on Sunday afternoon at the Mary Jo Moriarty Pool in Bridgewater. 

The host Bears defeated Rhode Island College, 93-23, but dropped a 64-60 decision to Plymouth State.  The Panthers earned a sweep of the meet with a 91-28 victory over RIC.

Senior Renee Marcos (Lakeville, Mass.) and sophomore Nelia Borden (Fall River, Mass.) paced the Bears with two individual wins apiece.  Marcos placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.58) and 200 individual medley (2:32.83), while Borden captured the 50 freestyle (28.34 seconds) and 100 freestyle (1:00.33) events.

Marcos, Borden, sophomore Ashley Dunican (Bennington, Vt.) and freshman Sarah Rechtiene (Southbury, CT) also teamed up to grab the top spot in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:04.37.

Also posting individual victories for the Bears were freshman Kristen Carey (East Taunton, Mass.) in the 1,000 freestyle (12:00.55) and sophomore Chelsea Nolan (Lowell, Mass.) in the 500 freestyle (5:51.24).

The Panthers, who won nine of the 16 events, were led by senior Nicole Brodeur (Claremont, N.H.), junior Amy Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Shannon Rogers (Beverly, Mass.).  Brodeur touched the wall first in the 200 butterfly (2:30.27) and 100 butterfly (1:05.95), while Mulhern placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:07.70) and the 200 backstroke (2:25.77).  Rogers won both diving events with scores of 171.70 points on the one-meter board and 163.80 points on the three-meter.

Plymouth improves to 2-5 with their first dual meet victories of the season.  Bridgewater goes to 4-7 with the split while RIC drops to 0-2. 

Bridgewater will travel to Westfield State University on Saturday afternoon for a one o'clock meet with the Owls.  Plymouth hosts Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday at 11:00 AM.  RIC is off until February 4th when the Anchorwomen travel to Eastern Connecticut State University for an 11:00 AM meet with the Warriors.
