Sydney Dewhurst Named MASCAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University senior defender Sydney Dewhurst has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

Dewhurst anchored a BSU defensive unit that did not give up a shot in a 3-0 MASCAC shutout victory over MCLA and allowed just seven shots on goal in a 1-1 tie with non-conference foe UMass Boston. The Bears went 1-0-1 on the week and posted a team 0.50 goal against average with one shutout. Dewhurst also scored the game-tying goal in the tie with the Beacons and dished out a pair of assists in the win over the Trailblazers.

Through 16 games this season, Dewhurst has notched nine goals and six assists for 24 points. Four of her team-leading nine goals have been game-winners.

Dewhurst is currently tied for the MASCAC lead in game-winning goals and ranks third in both goals and scoring. She is also tied for third among the conference leaders in assists.

On a national level, Dewhurst is tied for 43rd in all of Division III with her four game-winning goals.

In 25 games over two seasons with the Bears, Dewhurst has amassed 12 goals (five game-winners) and nine assists for 33 points.

The MASCAC Defensive Player of the Week honor marks the first of Dewhurst's career. She also earned MASCAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades on two separate occasions earlier this season.

The BSU women's soccer team is currently 10-5-1 on the season and a perfect 7-0 in the MASCAC standings. The Bears are the top seed in this week's MASCAC Tournament and will host a semifinal round game on Friday night at seven o'clock.
