Women's Soccer Holds Off Worcester, 2-1, for MASCAC Victory

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University Women's soccer team a posted an exciting 2-1 victory over the visiting Worcester State University Lancers on Saturday evening in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) contest at Swenson pitch.

With the victory the Bears improve to 8-2-2 (3-0-1 MASCAC) on the season, while the Lancers drop to 2-9-1 (1-3 MASCAC). Since the two teams first met in 1991 Bridgewater State is 19-18-1 versus Worcester State, including an 11-6-3 stint at home.

Freshman Jenna Sweeney (Wilmington, Mass.) posted her first collegiate goal for the Bears in the 32nd minute of the game. Michelle Belcher (Norton, Mass.) sent an elevated pass into the box allowing Sweeny to leap higher than her defender, sending a picturesque header into the far-right corner of the net.

Less than 90 seconds later, the Bears added another marker to the scoreboard. Olivia Robarge (Pepperell, Mass.) executed on a Bears corner kick. Robarge received a Belcher redirect in the box, took a quick step to the ball, and buried her second goal of the 2022 campaign.

Belcher and Makenna Lessard (East Bridgewater, Mass.) both added exciting opportunities for the Bears to strike again mid-way through the second half. Lancers' goalie Mallory Dupuis (Leominster, Mass.) made two outstanding saves in net, one diving stop and one leaping punch save, to keep the Bears from adding to their lead. 

Erin Condon (East Bridgewater, Mass.) netted her third goal of the season for the Lancers with 18 minutes left in the game. After two close header attempts on the same play, Condon connected with the back of the net, just sneaking a goal past Bears' netminder Logan Levesque (Bristol, R.I.)

It was a busy day in net for Levesque as she saw 20 Worcester shots and turned away ten on goal, earning her eighth win of the season in goal for Bridgewater.

Worcester State goalkeeper, Dupuis, took the loss in net while tallying eight saves on the day. The Lancers also added a team save.

Worcester held the advantage in shots on the day 20-15, while Bridgewater held the edge on corner kicks 7-2.

In upcoming action, the Bears will travel to Tufts on Wednesday October 12th for a 5:00 PM non-conference matchup with the Jumbos. The Lancers will be back in action on Saturday October 15th as they host the Vikings of Salem State in an 11:00 MASCAC contest.
