Women's Soccer Blanks Lesley, 1-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's soccer team blanked visiting Lesley University, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Bears improve to 2-1-1 on the young season with their second straight shutout, while the visiting Lynx fall to 1-3. The two teams were meeting for the first time.

Freshman forward Abigail Shea (Somerset, Mass.) got the Bears on the board in the 11th minute with her first collegiate goal. Shea converted off a centering cross from senior forward Michelle Belcher (Norton, Mass.) as she tucked a shot under the cross bar from just outside the six. Sophomore defender Bailey Brown (Plymouth, Mass.) also assisted on the goal as her long throw-in set up Belcher's crossing pass.

Junior defender Sydney Dewhurst (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and senior Erin Clancey (Middletown, R.I.) had quality scoring opportunities to extend the BSU lead in the first half. Dewhurst rang a header off the post following a corner kick in the 28th minute, and Clancey slipped a shot just wide of the far post after getting behind the defense in the 30th minute.

Freshman defender Lauren Sellmayer (North Easton, Mass.) nearly gave the Bears' a two-goal advantage midway through the second half as her shot from 35 yards out clanked off the crossbar.

Bridgewater finished with a 23-8 shot advantage for the game as well as a 6-0 edge in corner kick attempts.

BSU freshman goalkeeper Logan Levesque (Bristol, R.I.) made four saves to record her second straight shutout. Senior netminder Audrey Calhoun (Chapel Hill, N.C.) turned aside four shots in the setback for the Nor'easters.

The Bears are back in action next Tuesday night when they entertain the Seahawks of Salve Regina University at seven o'clock. The Lynx travel to Wellesley College on Wednesday afternoon to take on the Blue at four.
