BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Junior forward Emma Sanders (Seekonk, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Bridgewater State University women's soccer team to a 3-1 non-conference victory over visiting UMass Boston on Tuesday night at Swenson Field.

Senior midfielder Melissa Morton (Uxbridge, Mass.) added a pair of assists for the host Bears who improve to 8-5-2 on the season. The Beacons fall to 11-6-1 with the setback.

Sanders opened the scoring just 79 seconds into the game with her sixth goal of the season. Freshman forward Delaney Langton (Scituate, R.I.) set up the goal as she chipped the ball into the box after corralling a UMB goal kick. Sanders beat a defender to the ball and slipped a shot by the oncoming goalkeeper from about 14 yards out.

Senior midfielder Nicole Simas (Dartmouth, Mass.) made it a 2-0 game in the sixth minute as her shot from the top of the 18 beat the keeper through the five-hole. Sanders and Morton assisted on Simas' team-leading seventh goal of the 2018 campaign and 20th of her career.

The Corsairs closed the gap to 2-1 in the 50th minute as freshman forward Grace McGettrick (Marshfield, Mass.) ripped a shot over the BSU netminder from 23 yards out. Classmate Allie Crawford (Kingston, Mass.) assisted on the strike.

Junior defender Kaitlyn Bongarzone (Mansfield, Mass.) reclaimed the two-goal advantage for the Bears with her second goal of the season in the 54th minute.  Off a corner kick, Morton headed the ball back to Bongarzone who deposited a shot from 14 yards out inside the left post.

UMass finished with a 20-8 shot advantage as well as a slight 4-3 edge in corner kick attempts.

Junior goalkeeper Kellie Souza (Wilmington, Mass.) made four saves between the pipes for the Bears to record her eighth win of the season. Freshmen Caroline Richards (Duxbury, Mass.) and Abby McCulloch (Weymouth, Mass.) combined to make one save in the loss for the Beacons.

Both teams wrap up regular season play on Saturday afternoon with conference games. The Bears travel to MCLA for a 2:30 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) contest with the Trailblazers, while the Beacons head to Keene State College to take on the Owls at one in a Little East Conference matchup.
