Women's Soccer Blanks Salem State, 1-0

SALEM, Mass. -- Sophomore forward Kellsie Mitchell's (Bristol, R.I.) goal in the 76th minute broke a scoreless tie and propelled the Bridgewater State University women's soccer team to a 1-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) victory over Salem State University  on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Bridgewater State improves to 4-3-4 with the win and remains unbeaten in conference play with a 3-0-1 record. Salem State slips to 2-9-1 overall and 2-2 in the MASCAC standings.

Mitchell broke free and snuck a shot just underneath Salem State keeper Amanda Backe (Danvers, Mass.) for the game's only score.

BSU junior goalkeeper Lauren DeSousa (Taunton, Mass.) did the rest, keeping Salem State off the scoreboard to register her sixth solo shutout of the season and 13th in a BSU uniform.

Salem State and Bridgewater State played an evenly contested first half, with neither team generating many scoring opportunities as the Vikings managed just two shots on goals in the first 45 minutes of play.

The Bears pressured the Vikings defense in the final minutes, and three straight corner kick attempts gave Bridgewater State their best scoring opportunity. However, senior forward Marissa Yowell's (Ashland, Mass.) shot off of a corner kick by sophomore defender Kassidy Campbell (Norton, Mass.) hit just underneath the crossbar, but did not cross the goal line and the teams remained deadlocked heading into halftime. The Bears held a 5-2 advantage in shots in the first half.

Bridgewater State finished with 14 shots compared to Salem Sate's eight, and held a 7-6 advantage in corners.

Salem State will host Eastern Nazarene this Tuesday at 4:00 PM. Bridgewater State travels to Fitchburg State for a 10:00 AM game on October 15th.
