Women's Soccer Blanks RIC, 1-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Bridgewater State University women's soccer team blanked host Rhode Island College, 1-0, in a non-conference contest played at Alumni Field on Wednesday afternoon. The lone goal by Bridgewater State broke a string of nearly 330 scoreless minutes and gave the Bears their first win of the season.

Bridgewater State (1-2-1) controlled the action early and had a 15-4 advantage over RIC (1-3) in shots before breaking the scoreless tie in the 40th minute. Sophomore forward Kelsie Mitchell (Bristol, R.I.) took possession of the ball from 25 yards out and blasted a shot that caromed off the crossbar and bounced straight down into the RIC goal to put the Bears up 1-0. The visitors took the one goal lead heading into halftime after outshooting the Anchormen by a 16-5 margin in the opening stanza.

The Anchorwomen had several scoring changes down the stretch in the second half, which included back-to-back shots from sophomore forward Eleni Grammas (Cranston, R.I.) and sophomore defender Nicole Grammas (Cranston, R.I.) that were turned aside by Bridgewater State junior goalkeeper Lauren DeSousa (Taunton, Mass.) to preserve the win for the Bears.

DeSousa recorded her second shutout of the season and ninth overall since joining the Bears prior ro last season. DeSousa notched seven saves on the afternoon.

The Bears outshot the Anchorwomen, 24-15, for the game and held a 5-3 edge in corner kick attempts.

Freshman forward Alana Vincent (Taunton, Mass.) paced the Bears with seven shots including three on frame.

Both teams open up conference play on Saturday afternoon at one. The Bears travel to MCLA , while the Anchorwomen host the University of Southern Maine.
