Women's Soccer Falls to Salve Regina in Overtime, 2-1

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Senior Ashley Jamieson (Warwick, R.I.) scored in the 97th minute to break a 1-1 tie and lead the Salve Regina University women's soccer team to an exciting 2-1 overtime victory versus Bridgewater State University at Reynolds Field on Tuesday evening.

The win was the second straight for the Seahawks who improve to 6-4-0 on the year, while the Bears drop to 5-4-1 overall.

Jamieson and classmate Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) each contributed both a goal and an assist in the win, while junior Jacqueline McPherson (Mansfield, Mass.) earned the victory in net, making nine saves to improve to 6-4-0 on the year.

Senior forward Molly Copeland (North Falmouth, Mass.) scored for the Bears, while freshman Allison LeBel (Millis, Mass.) earned BSU's lone assist.

The Seahawks jumped on the board in the 40th minute of play when Jamieson sent a corner kick into the box where it was headed home by Birrell for her conference leading tenth goal of the season.

Salve Regina had several great opportunities to expand its lead before the half, but a blast from Jamieson and a header by Birrell both sailed just wide right of the net to keep the score at 1-0 heading into the break.

The momentum swung in the second half, as the Bears continually applied pressure in the Salve Regina zone. Bridgewater eventually tied the score in the 73rd minute when Lebel sent a free kick into the box where it was flicked into the net by Copeland, sending the game into overtime.

The Bears had several golden opportunities in the early moments of overtime, but could not convert.

The game appeared to be over when junior Erica Jonasson (Wrentham, Mass.) drove into the box and chipped the ball past the sliding Salve Regina goalkeeper. The shot was headed for the back of the net when senior defender Alyssa Roshong (Verona, N.J.) came flying in to clear the shot away.

The Bears nearly scored a second time off a shot by freshman forward Mackenzie Hatfield (Whitman, Mass.) but McPherson came out of the net and made a sliding save to keep Salve Regina alive.

With new life, the Seahawks capitalized when Birrell centered a ball to Jamieson which she lofted up and over the Bridgewater State goalkeeper for the game-winning score.

The Bears return to the pitch on Thursday when they host Roger Williams at 7 p.m., while the Seahawks will be back in action this Saturday, hosting Curry in a CCC matchup at noon.
