Women's Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision to 18th Ranked Brandeis

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – 18th ranked Brandeis University posted a 2-0 shutout of host Bridgewater State University in women's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Judges, who improve to 5-0 on the season, have not been scored up this season as they have outscored their opponents by a margin of 14-0.  With their 14 goals, Brandeis also equaled their entire scoring output for the 2011 season.  Bridgewater falls to 3-1-1 on the year with their first loss of the 2012 campaign.

Brandeis got on the board early as junior midfielder Mary Shimko (Bay Village, Ohio) scored off a feed from sophomore forward Sapir Edalati (Great Neck, N.J.) just 1:59 into the game.  Edalati slipped a pass down the middle of the field to Shimko who split the BSU defense and beat the Bears' netminder with a low shot into the right corner of the net.

The Judges would make it a 2-0 game with just 2:44 remaining in the opening stanza as sophomore midfielder Corinne Bortniker (Chappaqua, N.Y.) one-timed a cross from freshman defender Cassidy Schwartz (Chandler, Ariz.) and deposited the ball inside the left post.

The Brandeis goaltending tandem of senior Francine Kofinas (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and sophomore Michelle Savuto (Ridgewood, N.J.) combined to make two saves in posting the team's fifth straight shutout.

Bridgewater managed to outshoot the Judges by a slight margin of 12-11, but attempted just one corner kick as opposed to ten for the visitors.

BSU goaltenders Kerry Condon (Junior; Whitman, Mass.) and Kristen Rowe (Senior; Burlington, Mass.) each made one save between the pipes for the Bears.

In upcoming action, Bridgewater entertains Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe Fitchburg State University on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 in the conference opener for both teams.  Brandeis hosts Bowdoin College on Saturday at one.
