Women's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Double Overtime Draw

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University and Babson College played to a 1-1 double overtime draw in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday night at Swenson Field.

The Bears move to 2-0-1 on the season with the tie, while the visiting Beavers' record stands at 0-2-1.

After a scoreless first half, Babson senior midfielder Nichole Vargas (Warren, R.I.) broke the ice in the 58th minute.  Junior forward Mika Cucullo (South Salem, N.Y.) started the play with a long pass onto the foot of Vargas outside the 18.  Vargas took on and beat a BSU defender one-on-one and ripped a shot from 15 yards out and into the lower left corner.

The Bears tied it in the 80th minute on freshman forward Mackenzie Hatfield's (Whitman, Mass.) first collegiate marker.  Freshman midfielder Allison LeBel (Millis, Mass.) set up the goal with a long serve into the 18.  Sophomore forward Erica Jonasson (Wrentham, Mass.) redirected the pass to the foot of Hatfield who calmly chipped a shot over the Babson netminder and into the back of the net.

The game remained tied at 1-1 through regulation. In overtime, each team managed just one shot apiece over the two sessions.

Bridgewater held a 10-8 advantage in shots and a slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks.  The Bears goaltending tandem of junior Kerry Condon (Whitman, Mass.) and senior Kristen Rowe (Burlington, Mass.) split time between the pipes.  Condon played the first half and turned aside two shots.  Rowe came on to start the second half and made one save in 65 minutes of work. Babson sophomore Elizabeth Estabrook (Falmouth, Maine) made her third straight start in goal for the Beavers.

Bridgewater travels to Plymouth State on Saturday afternoon for a 4:30 game with the Panthers.  Babson entertains SUNY Potsdam on Saturday at one.
