Beaton Nets OT Winner as Women's Soccer Downs Fitchburg, 2-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University senior midfielder Kylie Beaton (Epsom, N.H.) scored the game-winning goal just over three minutes into the second overtime period as the Bears edged Fitchburg State, 2-1, in MASCAC women's soccer action this afternoon at Swenson Field.

Bridgewater improves to 3-4 on the season and remains unbeaten in conference play with a 2-0 mark.  Fitchburg falls to 3-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the MASCAC.

Fitchburg started the scoring in the 37th minute off a restart from about twenty yards out. Senior midfielder Katie Hayward (Townsend, Mass.) sent a beautiful ball into the middle of the box that junior midfielder Julie Dowson (Winthrop, Mass.) headed into the back of the net.

Just two minutes later the Bears were able to even the score at 1-1.  Junior midfielder Jordan McDermott (East Bridgewater, Mass.) took a feed from classmate Laura Sudbey (Rockland, Mass.) and chipped the ball over the Fitchburg netminder for her third goal of the season.

The game continued to go back and forth as Fitchburg State put up 15 shots, and the Bears countered with 11 of their own in regulation as the match moved to overtime.

Fitchburg had the best opportunity in the first extra session as junior defender Hannah Mitchell (Hopedale, Mass.) received a long volley off a restart in the box but headed it wide.

In the 113th minute of play the Bears were able to end the stalemate. Junior forward Amber LaPorte (New Hartford, Conn.) headed a pass over a Falcon defender to an open Beaton. The senior captain ripped a shot into the lower-left corner of the net for her first goal of the season.

Bridgewater State senior goalie Kayla Grover (Haverhill, MA) made four saves in the key conference win.  Fitchburg junior Melanie Berent (West Hartford, Conn.) turned aside three shots for the Falcons.

The Bears hope to keep up their momentum when they host MIT on Thursday at 4:00 PM in a non-conference game.  Fitchburg hosts Emmanuel College on Wednesday afternoon also at 4.
