Women's Soccer Rallies Past Salve Regina, 4-1

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Bridgewater State College scored four goals in a span of 10:52 in the second half to overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit and defeat Salve Regina University, 4-1, in non-conference women's soccer action Thursday afternoon at Brother Reynolds Field.

Senior forward Megan Williamson (Ludlow, MA), senior midfielder Julie Sullivan (Whitman, MA), junior forward Ashley Hersey (Newburyport, MA), and senior forward Kaitlin Lamothe (Wrentham, MA) each scored for the Bears, who improved to 8-2-3 with the win.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Vaudrain (Pawtucket, RI) made nine saves for the Seahawks, who fell to 4-13 with the loss.

Sophomore Kendra Andrie (Muskego, MI) gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead at 25:14 of the first half, heading home a corner kick from senior Ryan Murphy (Wilmington, MA) for her fourth goal of the season. The Bears held a 9-4 edge in shots at the end of the half.

In the second half, Williamson took a pass from Lamothe, broke in alone on Vaudrain, and beat her with a shot low to the left corner at 63:04 to tie the score at one. Just 40 seconds later, Sullivan one-timed a pass from junior midfielder Jacklyn Wisocky (Brockton, MA) past Vaudrain for her fifth goal of the season to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.

Hersey's fifth goal of the season off a feed from Williamson pushed the lead to 3-1 at 69:24, and Lamothe's team-leading 17th tally of the season at 73:56 capped the scoring.

The Bears outshot the Seahawks 14-1 in the second half, bringing the game total to 23-5 in favor of Bridgewater State. BSC senior netminder Ashley Spingler (West Springfield, MA) was forced to make just two saves to record the win in goal for the Bears. Spingler improved her win/loss record to 7-0-1 on the season.

Lamothe now has 64 points (28 goals, 8 assists) in her two seasons at BSC as she is just one point behind Kara Kennedy (1987-1989) for fifth place on the Bears' all-time scoring list. Williamson's three points upped her career total to 50 (20 goals, 10 assists) as she moved past Jeannie Rooney (1993-1996) and Jessica Chiachio (2004-2007) into seventh place amongst BSC all-time leading scorers.  

The Seahawks return to action on Saturday when they host Gordon at 1 p.m. Bridgewater travels to Framingham State College on Saturday morning for a 9 AM MASCAC match with the Rams.
