Women's Soccer Opens MASCAC Play with 5-1 Win over MCLA

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Senior midfielder Julie Sullivan (Whitman, MA) and junior forward Ashley Hersey (Newburyport, MA) tallied two goals apiece to lead the Bridgewater State College women's soccer team to a convincing 5-1 victory over MCLA this afternoon from Swenson Field in Bridgewater.

The game was the MASCAC opener for both teams as BSC improved to 1-1-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.  MCLA falls to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in the MASCAC.  The Bears have now won nine straight games against the Trailblazers dating back to the 2000 season.  Bridgewater is also 15-6-1 all-time versus MCLA since 1987 when the Bears first became a varsity program.

The Bears had give MCLA the early 1-0 lead as sophomore forward Jessica Tietgens (Stamford, VT) potted her tenth goal of the season off an assist from fellow sophomore Danielle Parenteau (Southampton, MA) just 26 seconds into the contest.

Bridgewater tied the game up at 1-1 in the 14th minute as junior midfielder Jacklyn Wisocky (Brockton, MA) registered an unassisted tally for her first goal of the season and the first of five unanswered goals for the Bears. 

Just over five minutes later, Sullivan gave BSC the lead for good as she netted her first goal of the season off an assist from senior forward Megan Williamson (Ludlow, MA). 

Bridgewater took a 2-1 lead into halftime before they broke the game wide open with a three-goal out burst in the second half.  Sullivan made it 3-1 less than seven minutes into the half with her second goal of the game. Hersey rounded out the scoring with a pair of goals less than five minutes apart with both scores coming off assists from Wisocky. 

Senior netminder Ashley Spingler (West Springfield, MA), making her first start of the season, turned aside three shots to record her first win of the season. Junior goaltender CeCe Von Tiesenhausen-Hush (Arlington, VT) made seven saves between the pipes for the Trailblazers.

Bridgewater held a 24-6 edge in shots for the game, including a 15-1 advantage in the second half. Spingler faced just one shot in the second half and did not have to make a save.

The Bears travel to Rhode Island College on Tuesday afternoon for a 4 o'clock non-conference match with the Anchorwomen.  MCLA heads to RPI on Tuesday afternoon to take on the Engineers at 5 PM.
