BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Junior forward Kristina McSharry (Plymouth, MA) potted the game-tying goal with just over six minutes remaining in regulation, as the Bridgewater State College women's soccer team battled Brandeis University to a 2-2 double-overtime tie this afternoon in Bridgewater.
McSharry, who transferred to Bridgewater from Merrimack College, netted her first goal in a BSC uniform off a headed pass from senior forward Kaitlin Lamothe (Wrentham, MA). The goal came as a result of a long cross directly into the box where Lamothe redirected the ball to an unguarded McSharry. McSharry then ripped a shot past the Brandeis keeper and inside the left post.
Lamothe had given BSC an early 1-0 lead as she notched her third goal of the season in the game's 14th minute. The senior forward stole a pass from midfield, went in on a breakaway and tucked a shot into the left side of the goal.
The Judges tied the game up at 1-1 just over two minutes later as sophomore midfielder Ellie Einhorn (Winter Park, FL) scored off a an assist from freshman midfielder Alanna Torre (Weston, FL). Torre redirected a corner kick opportunity and Einhorn headed the ball into the back of the net. Brandeis took the lead on a goal by freshman forward Izabella Miranda (Plymouth, MA) in the 39th minute. Junior forward Melissa Gorenkoff (Woodbury, NY) hit a cross into the box from the left side and Miranda headed it in.
The Bears had the best scoring chance in overtime. Lamothe, who had drilled a direct kick off the crossbar earlier in the game, also headed a shot off the crossbar in the second overtime period.
Brandeis held a 19-15 edge in shots for the game as well as a 7-5 advantage in corner kick attempts. BSC however outshot the Judges, 10-7, in the second half when McSharry and the Bears were able to net the tying goal.
Sophomore goaltender Kayla Grover (Haverhill, MA) registered eight saves between the pipes for the Bears. Junior Hillary Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, FL) turned aside six shots for Brandeis. Neither goaltender was forced to make a save in either overtime period.
The Bears (0-1-2) open MASCAC play on Saturday as they play host to MCLA at 1 PM. Brandeis (4-1-1) travels to Clark University on Saturday at noon for a non-conference match with the Cougars.
