Wrestling Places 15th at NEWA Dual Meet Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bridgewater State University wrestling team finished in 15th place on Sunday at the 2024 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Tournament hosted by Johnson & Wales University.

Seeded 16th at the tournament, the Bears (1-7) went 1-3 on the day with a 37-18 victory over #15 Plymouth State University in the 15th-place match. Bridgewater's three setbacks were to top seed Johnson & Wales, 46-7, #8 WPI, 38-15, and #12 Norwich University, 41-14.

Sophomores Vincent Player (Duxbury, Mass.) and Malcolm Chrispin (Hyde Park, Mass.) each went 3-1 on the day to lead the way for Bridgewater State.

Competing at the 174-pound weight class, Player posted a 9-1 major decision in the match with Johnson & Wales and cruised to an 18-3 technical fall victory against Norwich. Player moved up a weight class to 184 in the win over Plymouth State and earned a dominant 15-0 technical fall triumph.

The 133-pound Chrispin, who is now 16-7 on the season, won by forfeit against WPI and coasted to a 21-5 technical fall win over his opponent from Norwich. Chrispin then moved up two weight classes to 149 and posted a 4-0 decision in the win over the Panthers.

Junior James Grover (Wakefield, Mass.) went 2-1 competing in the 197-pound weight class. Grover recorded an 8-1 decision in the match against WPI and pinned (1:47) his opponent from Plymouth State.

Freshman heavyweight Michael Mastroianni (Milford, Mass.) and sophomore 125-pounder Sei Dolomengi (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) each finished 2-2 on the day. Mastroianni pinned his two adversaries from WPI (3:39) and Plymouth State (0:50). Dolomengi posted a 13-10 decision against the top-seeded Wildcats and moved up a weight class to 133 to notch a 20-4 technical fall victory in the win over the Panthers.

Freshman Adam Distasio (Hopkinton, Mass.) went 1-1 at 125 with a win by fall (3:35) against Plymouth State.

The Bears will head to Roger Williams University on Saturday for a quad meet starting at 11:00 AM.
