Morales Highlight Bears’ NEWA Postseason Award Winners

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University senior 184-pounder Edwin Morales was named as second team selection on the All-New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Team as the 2022-2023 NEWA postseason awards were announced.

BSU senior 133-pounder Wilson Gomes earned All-NEWA honorable mention honors, while freshman 149-pounder Jonathan Davila (Andover, Mass.) was selected to the NEWA All-Rookie Team.

Senior Ryan McCartney, junior Sean McCullough, sophomore Jizaiah Lopes (New Bedford, Mass.), and freshmen Sei Dolomengi (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Hayden Garland (Saugus, Mass.) were the Bears' five representatives on the NEWA All-Academic Team.

Morales went 18-4 (.818) with 11 pins, 29 takedowns, 42 near fall points and nine escapes in 2022-2023. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native garnered All-Northeast Region honors for the third straight season as he placed third at the regional championships competing to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships. He joined BSU Hall of Famers Craig Buckley and Frank Cammisa as the only wrestlers in program history to qualify three times.

Morales produced an overall mark of 67-14 (.531) in three seasons in a BSU singlet with 24 pins, 136 takedowns, 158 near fall points, ten reversals and 63 escapes. He is tied for ninth all-time at Bridgewater State in pins and ranks 21st in wins.

Gomes posted a record of 31-8 (.795) during the 2022-2023 campaign with 19 pins to go along with 52 takedowns, 114 near fall points, 13 reversals and 36 escapes. The Fogo, Cape Verde product placed fourth at the Northeast Regional to earn All-Northeast Region honors for the second straight season.

Gomes wrapped up his four-year BSU career with an overall record of 83-54 (.702) with 42 pins, 153 takedowns, 251 near fall points, 40 reversals and 147 escapes. He ranks third all-time in program history in pins and 11th in wins.

Davila put together a solid rookie campaign as he went 22-12 (.647) with seven pins, 44 takedowns, 94 near fall points, eight reversals and 11 escapes.

A native of Haverhill, Massachusetts, McCartney is a criminal justice major with a 3.28 grade point average. McCullough, who hails from North Reading, Massachusetts, is currently sporting a 3.24 GPA as he is majoring in biology. Lopes, a New Bedford, Massachusetts product, checks in with a 3.40 GPA, while Dolomengi, who hails from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, is a health science major with an outstanding 3.67 GPA. Garland, a Saugus, Massachusetts native, checks in with an impressive 3.81 GPA and is majoring in aviation management.
