Morales Advances to Third Straight NCAA Wrestling Championships

GORHAM, Maine -- Bridgewater State University senior Edwin Morales (Philadelphia, Pa.) placed second out of the 184-pound weight class and earned his third straigh national qualifier on Sunday at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships held at the Costello Sports Complex on the campus of the University of Southern Maine.

Morales, who was seeded third at 184, punched his ticket to the national championships via a semifinal round technical fall victory (19-3) over #7 William Smith of Williams College. Morales then dropped a tough 5-4 decision to top-seeded David McCullough of Coast Guard Academy in the championhship bout.

Morales went 3-1 at the two-day tournament as he is now 17-2 on the season and 66-12 in a BSU uniform.

Morales will compete in the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on Friday, March 10th and Saturday, March 11th at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Virginia. Seedings and the draw will be revealed in the next week.

Senior 133-pounder Wilson Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) also placed for the Bears. After winning both of his bouts on Saturday, the fourth-seeded Gomes dropped a 12-7 decision to #8 Adam Schaeublin of Trinity College in the semifinals. Gomes bounced back with a win by fall (4:35) over #6 Michael Gonyea of Castleton University in the consolation semifinals to keep his national qualifying hopes alive. Gomes's tournament run came to en end with a 14-3 major decision setback to third-seeded Chase Randall of Coast Guard in the third-place match.

Gomes wrapped up the season with an overall record of 31-6 including 19 pins. He finished his BSU carerer with 83 victories (11th all-time) and 42 pins (third all-time).
