Wrestling Splits Tri-Meet

BRISTOL, R.I. -- The Bridgewater State University wrestling team split a tri-meet hosted by Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears (2-8) posted a 34-15 victory over Plymouth State University and dropped a 37-12 decision to the host Hawks.

Seniors Wilson Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde), Ryan Higgins (Billerica, Mass.) and Edwin Morales (Philadelphia, Pa.) each went 2-0 on the day.

Gomes moved up a weight class to 141 and pinned (1:24) Yuri Case of Plymouth State. Competing back at the 133-pound weight class, Gomes recorded another first period pin (2:37) against Chris Tringali of Roger Williams.

Gomes improved to 23-5 on the season with 12 pins. He now has 74 victories in his career as he took over sole possession of 15th place on the Bears' all-time wins list.

The heavyweight Higgins (6-3) notched a win by forfeit against Plymouth State and then stunned Addison Boisvert of Roger Williams, 4-1. Boisvert was ranked third in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) heavyweight rankings.

Higgins improved his career win-loss record to 71-33 with the two victories as he moved into 17th place on the Bears' all-time wins list.

Morales picked up at win by forfeit at 184 in the victory over the Panthers and edged Cole Shaughnessy of Roger Williams, 5-2. Morales (8-1) entered the match ranked second in the NEWA 184-pound rankings, while Shaughnessy was fourth.

Morales is now 57-11 in three seasons at Bridgewater State.

Bridgewater State is back in action tomorrow afternoon when the Bears travel to Johnson & Wales University for the Wildcat Open. The tournament is slated to get underway at noon.
