Gomes, Hopkins Lead Wrestling at Messiah Petrofes

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Senior Wilson Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) placed third out of the 133-pound weight class and sophomore Michael Hopkins (Swampscott, Mass.) placed seventh at 165 to lead the Bridgewater State University wrestling team during the second and final day of the prestigious Messiah Petrofes Invitational on Saturday at Hitchcock Arena in Grantham. Seeded second at 133, Gomes went 5-1 over the weekend with three pins. After winning each of his first three bouts on Friday, Gomes dropped a 9-5 decision to third-seeded Gianni Manginelli of Springfield College in the semifinals. Gomes bounced back with back-to-back pins over Cole Anderson (4:32) of King's College and fourth-seeded Sean Rinebolt (1:13) of Shenandoah University to place third.

Wilson improves to 14-2 on the season with seven pins.

Hopkins, who was seeded 13th in the 165-pound weight class, posted a 5-2 mark at the tournament. After dropping a second-round decision on Friday, Hopkins (7-3) won his next three bouts to advance to Saturday's competition. He dropped a 5-2 decision to fifth-seeded Justin Richey of Gettysburg College in the consolation quarterfinals before bouncing back with a 4-2 upset victory over #6 seed Ronald Grevera of Muhlenberg College in the seventh-place match.

The Bears finished in 11th place in the team standings with 38.5 points. Alvernia University won the team title with 201.5 points.

The BSU wrestling team is back in action next Saturday (Dec. 10) when the Bears compete at the Scott Viera Open hosted by Roger Williams University.
