Wrestling Competes at Messiah Petrofes Invitational

GRANTHAM, Pa. -- The Bridgewater State University wrestling team competed during the opening day of the prestigious Messiah Petrofes Invitational on Friday in Grantham, Pennsylvania.

Senior 133-pounder Wilson Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) went 3-0 on the day while sophomore 165-pounder Michael Hopkins (Swampscott, Mass.) posted a 4-1 mark to advance to Saturday's competition.

Gomes (12-1), who was seeded second at 133, pinned Cole Anderson of King's College in his opening bout before posting a 10-2 major decision victory over SUNY Cortland's Devin Walker followed by a 11-0 quarterfinal round major decision against #7 seed Ricky Caamano of Muhlenberg College. Gomes will take on third-seeded Gianni Manginelli of Springfield College on Saturday in the semifinals. Manginelli and Gomes were ranked first and second, respectively, in the 133-pound weight class in the most recent New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Individual Rankings.

Seeded 13th, Hopkins (6-2) opened the day with a 14-6 major decision over Springfield's Kayo Torres before falling (2:45) in the second round to fourth-seeded Nicolini Belingeri of Muhlenberg. Hopkins bounced back with three straight wins to advance to Saturday's competition. He knocked off Noah Beal Hernandez of Springfield, 3-0, and followed that up with an 8-1 decision over King's Jackson Marcantonio. Hopkins then posted an 11-2 major decision against #8 seed Shane Trattner of Muhlenberg to earn a spot in the consolation quarterfinals. Hopkins will take on fifth-seeded Justin Richey of Gettysburg College in the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday.

BSU junior Conner Mackie (Ramstein-Miesembach, Germany) and freshman Jonathan Davila (Andover, Mass.) also recorded multiple wins for the Bears during Friday's competition.

Mackie (5-6) went 2-2 as the #11 seed in the 125-pound weight class including a 21-5 technical fall victory over JaJuan Givens of Greensboro College. He also pinned freshman teammate Sei Dolomengi (Brooklyn Park, Minn.). Mackie was eliminated from the tournament with a 9-3 setback to seventh-seeded Caiden Heller of host Messiah.

Seeded 22nd in the 149-pound weight class, Davila (6-6) posted an 8-1 decision over #11 seed Camerin Deville of Messiah before stunning sixth-seeded Luke Temple of Springfield, 5-4. He then dropped a 12-1 major decision to third-seeded Angelo Centrone of SUNY-Cortland in the championship quarterfinals. Davila was eliminated with a 3-1 setback to #9 seed Brandon Flores-Salazar of Alvernia University in the consolation round.
