Gomes Captures 133-Pound Title at Doug Parker Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University senior Wilson Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) captured the 133-pound title on Saturday at the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield College.

Gomes went 4-0 with one pin at the tournament as he improved to 9-1 (.900) on the season with four pins. Gomes now has 61 wins in his career and 27 pins.

Seeded first in his weight class, Gomes posted a 6-4 decision over Arauki Revi of Centenary before earning a win by fall (6:00) over Springfield's Brayan Mendez Membrano to advance to the semifinals.

Gomes advanced to the championship bout with a 12-7 decision against fourth-seeded Danny Haws of Centenary. He then edged Southern Maine's Ethan Ford, 7-6, to win the title.

Three of Gomes' nine wins this season have come against Ford.

BSU junior Conner Mackie (Ramstein-Miesembach, Germany) went 2-2 out of the 125-pound weight class as he was the only other Bear with multiple wins at the tournament. After dropping his opening bout of the day to #3 seed David Yeh of Williams College, Mackie pinned Robert Stone of Rhode Island College and followed that up with a 9-4 decision over Thomas Fischer of New York University. Mackie bowed to #8 seed Nikki Beato of Coast Guard Academy, 10-4, in the consolation quarterfinals. 

Bridgewater State finished 13th in the standings with 29.5 team points. Coast Guard captured the team title with 153 points followed by host Springfield (110.5 pts.) in second place and Trinity College (90 pts.) in third.

The Bears are off until Friday, December 2nd and Saturday, December 3rd when they compete in the 52nd Annual Messiah Petrofes Invitational in Grantham, Pennsylvania.
