Gomes Leads Wrestling at Roger Williams Invitational

BRISTOL, R.I. -- Senior Wilson Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) placed third out of the 133-pound weight class to lead the Bridgewater State University wrestling team on Saturday at the Roger Williams Invitational.

The Bears finished tenth in the team standings at the tournament.

Seeded fifth in the 133-pound bracket, Gomes went 4-1 on the day with three pins. He pinned (4:17) Caleb Massari of Castleton to open the day and followed that up with a 12-7 victory over fourth-seeded Ethan Ford of Southern Maine. Gomes dropped an 8-2 decision to top-seeded Joziah Fry of Johnson & Wales in the semifinals before bouncing back with a first period pin (2:19) of Shailen Savur in the consolation round and a win by fall (4:53) over third-seeded Michael Gonyea of Castleton in the third-place match.

Gonyea (2nd), Ford (4th) and Savur (7th) were all ranked among the top eight 133-pound wrestlers in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Preseason Individual Rankings. 

Wilson improves to 5-1 on the season. He now has 57 wins in his career and 26 pins.

Freshman Jonathan Davila (Andover, Mass.) and senior Ryan McCartney (Haverhill, Mass.) also finished with multiple wins for the Bears.

Davila went 2-2 out of the 149-pound weight class including an 18-0 technical fall victory over Kyle Pokornowski of Castleton and a 43-second pin of Andrew Palmeri of Norwich.

McCartney finished 2-2 in the heavyweight class with a 20-2 technical fall win over Castleton's Devin Dixon as well as an 8-3 decision against Colton Perkins of Castleton.

The Bears are back in action next Saturday when they travel to Springfield College for the Doug Parker Invitational.
