Wrestling Drops Pair of Match at Southern Maine Tri-Match

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University wrestling team competed at a tri-match hosted by the University of Southern Maine on Saturday.

The Bears (1-3) dropped a 34-8 decision to Johnson & Wales University, and fell by a margin of 30-10 to the host Huskies.

In the loss to JWU, junior Wilfredo David (Chicopee, Mass.) earned a 16-1 (4:52) technical fall victory out of the 174-pound weight class, while classmate Daniel MacNeil (Woburn, Mass.) posted a 6-3 decision at 197.

The Bears picked up three individual wins in the setback to Southern Maine.

BSU junior Devin Winn (Brockton, Mass.) recorded a 17-7 major decision win over senior Jared Garcia (Marshfield, Mass.) at 157. Winn was ranked sixth in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) preseason individual rankings, while Garcia was ranked eighth.

Senior Henry Oberlander (Mansfield, Mass.) notched a 10-4 decision competing out of the 197-pound weight class.

Sophomore heavyweight Ryan Higgins (Billerica, Mass.) improved to 3-0 on the season with a 6-1 decision over fellow sophomore Jake Peavey (South China, Maine). Higgins was ranked fourth in the NEWA preseason rankings, while Peavey was ranked sixth.

The Bears will wrestling next Friday and Saturday at the Roger Williams Invitational.
