Paul Sughrue Named NEWA & PWL Rookie Wrestler of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University freshman Paul Sughrue has been selected by both the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) and the Pilgrim Wrestling League (PWL) as the Rookie Wrestler of the Week.

Sughrue placed second in the 133-pound weight class at the Roger Williams Invitational this past weekend as he posted a 3-1 record.  The Methuen, Massachusetts native opened the tournament with a pin followed by two straight decisions including an exciting overtime win over a returning regional place-winner from Stevens Tech.

In five bouts this season, Sughrue is 4-1 with a pair of pins and eight takedowns.

"Paul is off to a good start in his career. He comes in everyday and works hard," noted BSU Head Coach Tim Ferreira. "He loves wrestling, is very focused and will push himself to get better every day."

Sughrue comes to Bridgewater State after an outstanding high school wrestling career at Methuen where he was a three-time Division 1 sectional, state, and All-State champion.  He posted an impressive 184-17 (.915) record during his high school career and was a two-time Boston Globe All-Scholastic.
