Wrestling Competes at NEWA Futures Tournament

BRISTOL, R.I. -- Members of the Bridgewater State University wrestling team competed at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Futures Tournament on Sunday hosted by Roger Williams University.

Freshman Shahib Blount (Haverhill, Mass.) posted a 1-2 record competing out of the 174 weight class.  After dropping his opening bout, Blount pinned John Hennessy of Trinity College at the 4:55 mark.  He then dropped a tough 6-4 decision to Mikhail Kihbkin of WPI in sudden victory overtime.

The Bears finished in tenth place in the team standings with 2.5 team points.  Host Roger Williams grabbed top honors with 145 points followed by Johnson and Wales University in second place (137.5 pts.) and Springfield College in third (100.5 pts.).

Also competing for the Bears at the tournament were junior 184-pounder Shawn Kavanagh (Georgetown, Mass.) as well as sophomore James Mulvey (Berkley, Mass.) and freshman Jason Gebara (Brockton, Mass.).  Mulvey and Gebara each wrestled in the 165-pound weight class.

Next weekend, the BSU wrestling team will compete at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Tournament hosted by Wesleyan University.  The tournament will take place on Saturday, March 1st (11:00 AM) and Sunday, March 2nd (10:00 AM).
