Wrestling Posts 24-15 Win over Western New England at NEWA Duals

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The 11th-seeded Bridgewater State University wrestling team posted a 1-2 record at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Headlock for Hunger Dual Meet Tournament on Sunday at the Tinsley Center as the Bears downed #13 Western New England University, 24-15, in the 13th-place match.

After spotting the Golden Bears a 12-0 lead, the Bears (2-6) won the next six bouts to claim the victory.

Sophomore Eric Bergeron (Brockton, Mass.) started the comeback with a 4-2 overtime decision at 149, followed by a pin by junior Matthew Armano (Methuen, Mass.) at 157.  A forfeit victory by sophomore Anthony Cote (Danbury, Conn.) at 165 gave BSU a 15-12 lead.

Sophomore Matthew Bergeron (Brockton, Mass.), junior Shawn Kavanagh (Georgetown, Mass.) and sophomore Casey Enderlin (Pasco, Wash.) each posted wins by decision at 174, 184 and 197, respectively, to give the Bears a 24-12 advantage and secure the dual meet victory.

In a battle featuring of two of the top three heavyweights in the NEWA, Jamison Sacco edged BSU senior Ricky Caruso (Waltham, Mass.), 2-0.  Sacco and Caruso had split two previous bouts this season.

Armano, Cote and Caruso each went 2-1 in the Bears' three matches at the tournament.

Third-seeded Roger Williams Universty captured the tournament title with a 28-12 victory over top-seeded Springfield College in the championship match. 

In upcoming action, Bridgewater will compete at the Metro-New England Duals hosted by Williams College on Saturday.
