Caruso Captures Heavyweight Title to Lead Wrestling at the CMSV Dolphin Open

BRONX, N.Y. -- Senior Ricky Caruso (Waltham, Mass.) captured the heavyweight title to lead the Bridgewater State University wrestling team at the non-scoring College of Mount Saint Vincent (CMSV) Dolphin Open.

Caruso went 4-0 at the tournament including a pin.  He defeated three-time NCAA qualifier and top-seeded Tom Foote of the Purple Valley Wrestling Club in the championship match, 6-0, in overtime.  Caruso improved his season record to 22-3 with his four wins at the tournament.

Freshman Paul Sughrue (Methuen, Mass.) posted a 2-1 mark out of the 133-pound weight class with a pair of pins.  Sughrue, seeded second, lost by injury default in the finals to top-seeded Silas Murray of Rhode Island College.

Junior Shawn Kavanagh (Georgetown, Mass.) went 3-1 competing out of the 184-pound weight class with a 9-0 major decision victory as well as a pair of wins by injury default.  Kavanagh was pinned by second-seeded Shane Stark of King's College in the finals.

Junior Matthew Armano (Methuen, Mass.) and Brett Reed (Mansfield, Mass.) each finished in fourth place in their respective weight classes.

Armano, seeded third at 157, posted a record of 3-2 with three pins.  He lost to eventual champion and number two seed Matt DiGiovanni of New York University in the semifinals before bouncing back with a pin the consolation semifinals.  Armano dropped a 5-2 decision to NYU's Matt Eulau in the third-place match.

Reed went 2-2 out of the 125pound weight class with a pair of wins by decision.  He recorded a 7-3 win in the consolation semifinals before dropping a 7-2 decision to Daniel Sedita of Williams College in the third-place match.

The Bears are off until Sunday, January 26th when they host the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Tournament.
