Wrestling Places 12th at Doug Parker Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University wrestling placed 12th at the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield College on Saturday.

Bridgewater State posted a team score of 50.5 points with senior Ricky Caruso (Waltham, Mass.) posting the top individual honor for the Bears with a third place finish in the heavyweight class.

Caruso recorded three straight decisions before falling to eventual champion and nationally ranked Jamison Sacco of Western New England in the semifinals.  Caruso would rebound with a 5-3 decision followed by a medical forfeit victory in the third place match.

Freshman Paul Sughrue (Methuen, Mass.) and junior Andrew Gauthier (Lowell, Mass.)  both finished in sixth place in their respective weight classes.

Sughrue won his first two bouts out of the 133-pound weight class, including a 24-6 technical fall victory over Nicolas Arroyo of STCC.   He then dropped three straight decisions including a 13-6 setback in the fifth place match.

Gauthier won his first two bouts but was unable to continue due to injury.

Junior Shawn Kavanagh (Georgetown, Mass.) recorded a 2-2 record out of the 197-pound weight class as he notched a win by fall (5:17) over Devin Hurst of host Springfield.

Springfield won the team title with a score of 142.0 points, followed by Roger Williams University (127.5 pts) and Stevens (119.0 pts).

After some time off, the BSU wrestling team will be back in action on December 6th and 7th when the Bears will compete at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational.
