Wrestling Places 13th at NEWA Dual Meet Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bridgewater State University wrestling team posted a 1-2 record and finished in 13th place at the 2013 New England Wrestling Association Dual Meet Tournament hosted by Johnson & Wales University on Sunday.  Third-seeded Springfield College captured the championship as the Pride downed #1 Wesleyan University, 19-18, in the title match.

Seeded 13th at the meet, the Bears dropped an opening round decision to number four seed Roger Williams University, 39-12, and then fell to 12th seeded Norwich University, 45-7, in the second round.  After a bye, the Bears posted a 39-13 victory over Plymouth State University in the 13th place match.

Senior 157-pounder Sean Fields (Norwalk, Conn.) was named to the All-Tournament Team as he went 3-0 on the day including a 12-4 major decision victory over Patrick McGrath of Norwich.  Junior TJ Vallee (Augusta, Maine) also finished 3-0 wrestling out of the 197-pound weight class.  Vallee recorded a first period pin against RWU's Drew Pichnarcik.

Rounding out the top seven placewinners, host and second seed Johnson & Wales took third-place with a 29-3 win over Williams College.  In the fifth place match, Roger Williams posted a 24-18 win against WPI while RIC notched a 27-16 victory against Coast Guard to take seventh-place on the day.

Prior to the championship match, the organization recognized Dwayne Wilson from Western New England University as the Man of the Year while John Harper, former Director of Athletics at Bridgewater State, was named Administrator of the Year.  Joe DiBella (U.S. Coast Guard Academy '62), Jon Dolan (Williams '06), James Gilbert (Johnson & Wales '02), Tim Ruberg (Johnson & Wales '05) and David Wilson (WPI '80) were inducted into the NEWA Hall of Fame.
