Wrestling Places Seventh at NEWA Duals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --- The Bridgewater State University wrestling team placed seventh at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Tournament on Sunday at Springfield College.

The Bears went 2-2 on the day, defeating Williams College in the opener (23-18) and Western New England in the final round (31-16), while bowing to champion Springfield in round two (36-6) and Roger Williams University in round three (28-14).

Senior heavyweight Patrick Walsh (Stoughton, Mass.) and sophomore 125-pounder Jonathan Murray (Bay Shore, N.Y.) each went 3-1 on the day to lead Bridgewater State.

Walsh, who was making his debut with the Bears, picked up a pair of forfeit victories in addition to a first period pin against Springfield.  His only loss was a tough 3-2 decision to nationally ranked Tom Foote of Williams.

Murray grabbed a 22-5 technical fall triumph in the match with Roger Williams and posted to two forfeit wins.  He also suffered a tough one-point loss, dropping a 6-5 decision to Tommy Casper of Williams.

Seniors Michael Fenner (Bergenfield, N.J.) and Andrew Frazer (West Hartford, Conn.) added two wins apiece for BSU.  Fenner registered a 15-0 tech. fall victory over his opponent from Williams to go along with a first period pin against Western New England.  Frazer earned a pair of wins by fall over his opponents from Williams and Western New England.

In upcoming action, the Bears host NEWA and Pilgrim Wrestling League rival Roger Williams on Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
