BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University senior Zachary Bates has been selected as the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Wrestler of the Week.
Bates earns the weekly honor after capturing the 174-pound title at the Roger Williams Invitational on Saturday. He went 4-0 with two pins and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Upper Weight Wrestler.
Through six bouts this season Bates, who hails from Leyden, Massachusetts, is sporting a 5-1 record with the two pins.
Last season, Bates went 32-9 with eight pins and placed second in his weight class at the NEWA Championships. He was also named a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Scholar All-American and a Pilgrim Wrestling League Scholar-Athlete All-Star.
