John Marsh Captures Messiah Tournament Title

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State College senior John Marsh captured the 149-pound title at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational on Saturday.

Bridgewater State posted a ninth place finish at the tournament.  The Bears recorded a score of 62.5 points. Wilkes University won the tournament with 146 points, followed by Springfield College with 144.5 points.

Seeded first in his weight class, Marsh, who hails from New Bedford, Massachusetts, won all five of his bouts including an 8-2 decision over number two seed Anthony Dattolo of Wilkes University in the championship match.

Marsh is currently 13-1 in 14 matches this season.  This was also his second consecutive tournament championship as he captured first place in the 149-pound weight class at the Springfield College Doug Parker Invitational on November 21st.  

Junior Zachary Bates (Leyden, MA) posted a third place finish in the 174-pound weight class for the Bears,  After dropping his first bout of the tournament, Bates won his next six matches including a 3-2 sudden victory decision over Bobby Bishop of Stevens Institute of Technology in the third place match.

Also placing high for the Bears were senior 157-pounder Frank Cammisa (Danbury, CT) and sophomore 133-pounder Ken Francis (New Bedford, MA).  Cammisa posted a record of 4-2 at the tournament with a 3-2 victory over Matt Cross of host Messiah in the fifth place match.  Francis went 3-2 at the two-day tournament with a 3-2 loss in the fifth place match.
