SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College wrestling team posted a 1-3 record and finished in eighth place at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Tournament held on Sunday at Springfield College.
The Bears, who were seeded eighth, won their opening match of the day with a 22-19 victory over ninth-seeded Norwich University. BSC then dropped a 40-6 decision to number one seed Williams College, followed by a 36-10 loss to fifth-seeded Springfield and a 25-20 defeat at the hands of number seven University of Southern Maine.
Williams was the champion of the tournament as the Ephs downed Johnson & Wales University, 31-15, in the title bout. Wesleyan University finished third, Rhode Island College fourth, and Springfield fifth.
Junior 165-pounder Ethan Raymond (Middlebury, VT) went 3-0 on the day for the Bears. Raymond, who did not wrestle in the match against Southern Maine, posted three wins by decision.
Senior Frank Cammisa (Danbury, CT) and junior Zachary Bates (Leyden, MA) both finished 3-1. Cammisa posted a win by fall and a major decision victory in two of his three wins, while Bates also had a pin and a major decision.
Bridgewater State is now 5-9 in dual meet competition on the season. The Bears host Pilgrim Wrestling League (PWL) rival Roger Williams University on Wednesday night (7:00) in their final home match of the season.
